 SIMPLE and EASY cable tester Jan 07, 2009

This is an excellent little cable tester for field techs who install LAN and coax cabling. It's simple - no fancy bells and whistles that aren't needed. Unit is small, rugged, and easy to spot in my toolbox. Metal belt clips on each unit are handy. Green/red/orange LED lights quickly show if the Ethernet 1/2, 3/6, 4/5, and 7/8 cable pairs are open, shorted, failed, crossed-over, or split. Will also confirm if your LAN cable is properly shielded. LED lights on both ends is nice feature. Auto-OFF feature saves battery. Basic coax testing for checking if connectors are properly seated. Not cheap, but a good tool for the money.

I'm a software developer who has to take care of hardware stuff from time to time, so this tool might not work for a network pro, but for my use it has been great so far. I don't have to fool around with cables anymore, switching them back and forth to find out if one is bad, just hook this up and 5 sec. later I have the answer. For bad cables it immediately tells me what the issue is and I can snip the connector and fix it in minutes usually. It is supposed to be able to generate a tone for cable tracing but I haven't figured that out yet, that's a problem with me not the tool I guess.

I bought this instead of fluke microscanner2 to save money. I've used microscanner before and it's a good product, this one does the same thing, except it's analog, can't measure wire length, does not present digital wiring diagram (which pin goes where), and has a weak tone function. But basically it's the same thing, only less cooler. I really liked the price, 89, even though it's a bit higher than others in this category, it's nowhere near 500 for microscanner2, and it can do pretty much the same exact thing, minus two functions you don't really need.
I think this is a good and a must have tool for computer guy if you focused on software and hardware, and don't do heavy network installs. If you do network installs I suggest you spend money for the heavy priced fluke, there is a saying you get what you pay for.

This cable tester works well, and I like the tone feature (even if it isn't terribly loud/strong). My only complaint is that the auto shutoff cannot be disabled or changed. It probably helps the battery life, but it gets annoying when it turns itself off while I'm trying to use it.

I love this thing. After too many experiences troubleshooting phantom errors that were just the inevitable bad crimp job, I bought this.
With this, you can run your CAT6 unterminated to get the perfect length, terminate one end and connect the slave tester. Cut the other end to length and terminate and then test. Depending on the specific error it gives you, you can reterminate or just give the crimper a tighter squeeze.
If you're doing advanced stuff and a plain pass/fail will not do, it even tells you which pairs are off, cross, open, short, split.
Explain to your company that this thing will pay for itself with the first bad connection that it catches (depending on your bill rate)
It even does coax and comes with a bunch of dongles for easy hookup.
Thoughts:
You don't need the optional case, since this has clips, you'll just clip it to your bag and be done with it.
I wish that it would test to see your top bandwidth over the line or something, but that's way pricey tech.
It should come with the 568-A and 568-B diagrams printed on the unit somewhere, but doesn't. Make your own from a mailing label and stick it on.
