You can get Office Account Express 2007 for free Nov 28, 2006
By Gadgester
"No Time, No Money"
QuickBooks is, deservedly, the standard bearer of small business accounting software. The new Simple Start version is meant to make it very easy for the small business owner to get started in everyday accounting (probably more like bookkeeping to purists). However, I want to alert you to Microsoft's free Office Accounting Express 2007 which offers the same features but is truly free. You can download OAE at ideawins dot com, a Microsoft website. The OAE 2007 was recommended in the Nov. 15, 2006 New York Times.
Whichever software you choose, good luck with your business!

What they don't tell you..... Mar 17, 2007
By John P. Scott It seems that all previous Quickbook versions will not run on Windows Vista and I had upgraded my system. So, I bought Simple Start as the least expensive way to get a Quickbook product to run on Vista. Turns out Simple start runs fine on Vista BUT you cannot load a company file from earlier versions. Thus, Simple Start was simply useless to me. When I called Intuit customer service they said that for another $100 they'd give me a license number that would unlock that feature. By that time I was committed and had no choice. Talk about getting ripped off!!!

Good product, but bad information for this version Jan 15, 2007
By Bradford R. Eichhorn

I have used Quickbooks Basic for a number of years both in my church and for my business. I have kept QB 2004 Basic since the upgrades were not immediately necessary for me.
I chose to upgrade this year to keep current on maintenance, etc. so again I chose the most basic product offered - "Simple Start". I received it just fine and it installed perfectly.
However, it does not upgrade any previous QB files. As I investigated, Intuit says that it won't upgrade files from previous QB versions on their web site (albeit in small print) and on the product box itself, but that was not ever mentioned in the Amazon listing.
So then I had to upgrade to the next higher version - an additional $80. QB Pro also works very well; it's just a shame that Intuit insists on misleading customers by not providing full information through all marketing channels. The Intuit phone rep also tried to overcharge me $20 for the upgrade but quickly accepted the correct amount when I pointed out their error a second time.

QuickBooks 2007 Simple Start Free Starter Edition Mar 04, 2007

Before buying QuickBooks you should Google: QuickBooks 2007 Simple Start Free Starter Edition. This free version never times out. You can immediately download 400m or get the CD with no shipping charge. The big limit in the free upgradeable version is you only get 20 total customers and vendors, so it is ideal for students and those with limited needs.

Incomplete accounting software Jan 11, 2007
By Michael Keur I suppose that this software does what it says it does, but I am frustrated that it lacks the ability to hold payables for future payment. You need to upgrade (at additional $'s) to get this feature. Otherwise, it is easy to use and intuitive. I especially like the ability to make changes and deletions to entries. This is great for someone like me who has little knowledge of accounting. Overall, I would say that this is adequate for the very small business, but plan on the upgrade as the business expands.
